The little Baptist chapel at Stone was built in 1802. It has no foundations, but was built of local materials (wood from the next door saw mill, and local tiles) as a lean-to attached to the minister’s house. Its builders called it “Ebenezer” a word from the Bible meaning – “God has helped us till now”. Worship has been held regularly ever since, although within living memory services have only been held on Sunday evenings during the summer months. A number of pastors served the congregation in the early years, but during the last 100 years the chapel has been cared for by a group of trustees. Several of the congregation from the past are buried in the small graveyard surrounding the chapel. At one time the chapel also had a Sunday school.
The services are open to all and follow the same simple pattern today as they did in 1802. Three hymns are sung, together with Bible reading (taken from the King James Version (1611) of the Bible), prayer and a sermon based on a verse of the Bible.
Two special services are held each year: on Easter Monday to mark the anniversary of the opening of the chapel and a Harvest Thanksgiving service on the third Wednesday in September. On these occasions an old fashioned chapel tea is served between the services.
We are a Baptist chapel – that is we baptise adults by full immersion in water on a confession of their faith. We are associated with a number of other chapels around the world. This group of churches publish a magazine The Gospel Standard (the oldest religious monthly magazine in the world – started in 1835) and all use Gadsby’s Selection of Hymns (first published in 1814). Further details about The Gospel Standard can be found here. A statement of what we believe is available here . A list of the churches we associate with can be found here.
